Purpose
MCL National
Marine Corps League, the Marine Corps League National — the community. The detachment dates to 1951, when veterans home from the Second World War and Korea wanted a room of their own and a way to keep serving after the uniform came off.
The work is ordinary and steady. A flag detail at a funeral. A winter drive that fills a corner of the hall with gifts. A scholarship evening where the members hand an envelope to a student and then go back to the coffee. None of it is loud. All of it is the point of the charter.
Meetings are the third Wednesday at 6:30 PM, at the hall — the community. This page is a sample so neighbors can see the shape of the work. The group itself has not claimed the page, so the stories here are an illustration, written in the voice the detachment might use.

Notes from the first meeting
Marine Corps League. The year opens the usual way: a short meeting, a full pot of coffee, and a list of local families the detachment already knows. The members voted to keep the spring scholarship on the calendar and to pass the word person to person — the community.

Showing up for the spring scholarship — the community
By spring the hall had the spring scholarship underway. Nothing about it was complicated. The National set a date, split the jobs, and showed up. A few neighbors who are not members came for the afternoon and stayed to ask about the next meeting — the community.

What the notebook says so far
Late summer the detachment looked back at the notebook. The honor detail had been out more than once, the community table had fed a crowded room, and the officers reminded everyone that the next business meeting is the third Wednesday at 6:30 PM. This note is a sample of how the detachment might tell that year — the community.
