In 1986 a handful of veterans chartered Department — IL. From that first meeting the detachment grew into a hall that still marks the year with a memorial service, a community project, and a table full of people who know one another’s stories.
People point to the detachment for the Memorial Day observance and for the quieter help that never makes a program — IL. The members would rather be useful than famous, which is why the hall still smells like coffee on meeting night.
The regular meeting is the third Wednesday at 6:30 PM. Anyone planning to visit should confirm the night before they come, because a funeral detail or a weather delay can move it. Notes from the first meeting

By spring the hall had a Saturday of hall repairs underway. Nothing about it was complicated. The Department set a date, split the jobs, and showed up. A few neighbors who are not members came for the afternoon and stayed to ask about the next meeting — IL.

What the notebook says so far
Late summer the detachment looked back at the notebook. The honor detail had been out more than once, the community table had fed a crowded room, and the officers reminded everyone that the next business meeting is the third Wednesday at 6:30 PM.
