In 1988 a handful of veterans chartered Detachment 554 — Apache Junction, AZ. From that first meeting the detachment grew into a hall that still marks the year with a memorial service, a community project, and a table full of people who know one another’s stories.
The work is ordinary and steady. A flag detail at a funeral. A winter drive that fills a corner of the hall with gifts. A scholarship evening where the members hand an envelope to a student and then go back to the coffee. None of it is loud. All of it is the point of the charter.

Notes from the first meeting

By spring the hall had the spring scholarship underway. Nothing about it was complicated. The Detachment 554 set a date, split the jobs, and showed up. A few neighbors who are not members came for the afternoon and stayed to ask about the next meeting — Apache Junction.

Late summer the detachment looked back at the notebook.
