In 1954 a handful of veterans chartered Post 386 — Cape May, NJ. From that first meeting the post grew into a hall that still marks the year with a memorial service, a community project, and a table full of people who know one another’s stories.
People point to the post for the Memorial Day observance and for the quieter help that never makes a program — Cape May. The comrades would rather be useful than famous, which is why the hall still smells like coffee on meeting night.

Notes from the first meeting

Showing up for the spring scholarship — Cape May
By spring the hall had the spring scholarship underway. Nothing about it was complicated. The Post 386 set a date, split the jobs, and showed up. A few neighbors who are not members came for the afternoon and stayed to ask about the next meeting — Cape May.

Late summer the post looked back at the notebook.
