American Legion Post 5. Its post has met since 1958 — Saint Pauls, NC. The charter came in the years after the Second World War and Korea, and the Legionnaires who stayed treated the monthly meeting as a standing promise: show up, look after one another, and leave the town a little better.
People point to the post for the Memorial Day observance and for the quieter help that never makes a program — Saint Pauls. The Legionnaires would rather be useful than famous, which is why the hall still smells like coffee on meeting night.
The meeting line says the first Thursday at 7:00 PM, which is the rhythm the directory lists. Come for the business, stay for the people. The portraits and the posts here are sample material, standing in until the post writes its own — Saint Pauls, NC.

Notes from the first meeting
American Legion Post 5. The year opens the usual way: a short meeting, a full pot of coffee, and a list of local families the post already knows. The Legionnaires voted to keep the spring scholarship on the calendar and to pass the word person to person — Saint Pauls, NC.

Showing up for the spring scholarship — Saint Pauls
By spring the hall had the spring scholarship underway. Nothing about it was complicated. The Post 5 set a date, split the jobs, and showed up. A few neighbors who are not members came for the afternoon and stayed to ask about the next meeting — Saint Pauls.

What the notebook says so far
Late summer the post looked back at the notebook. The honor detail had been out more than once, the community table had fed a crowded room, and the officers reminded everyone that the next business meeting is the first Thursday at 7:00 PM. This note is a sample of how the post might tell that year — Saint Pauls, NC.
