American Legion Post 178 Holmes. Its post has met since 1925 — Beaver Xing, NE. The charter came in the years after the World Wars, and the Legionnaires who stayed treated the monthly meeting as a standing promise: show up, look after one another, and leave the town a little better.

By spring the hall had a Saturday of hall repairs underway. Nothing about it was complicated. The Post 178 set a date, split the jobs, and showed up. A few neighbors who are not members came for the afternoon and stayed to ask about the next meeting — Beaver Xing.

Late summer the post looked back at the notebook. The honor detail had been out more than once, the community table had fed a crowded room, and the officers reminded everyone that the next business meeting is the first Thursday at 7:00 PM.
