Purpose

MCL Detachment #984

VFW Post 5789, Lee's Summit MO

Simpson Hoggatt #984, the Marine Corps League Detachment 984 — Lee's Summit, MO. The detachment dates to 1972, when veterans home from the Second World War and Korea wanted a room of their own and a way to keep serving after the uniform came off.

The work is ordinary and steady. A flag detail at a funeral. A winter drive that fills a corner of the hall with gifts. A scholarship evening where the members hand an envelope to a student and then go back to the coffee. None of it is loud. All of it is the point of the charter.

Meetings are Meet 3rd Thursday of the Month, 7:00 PM, at the hall — Lee's Summit. This page is a sample so neighbors can see the shape of the work. The group itself has not claimed the page, so the stories here are an illustration, written in the voice the detachment might use.
