Purpose

MCL Detachment #810

American Legion Post 31, Auburn ME

In 1980 a handful of veterans chartered Detachment 810 — Auburn, ME. From that first meeting the detachment grew into a hall that still marks the year with a memorial service, a community project, and a table full of people who know one another’s stories.

The work is ordinary and steady. A flag detail at a funeral. A winter drive that fills a corner of the hall with gifts. A scholarship evening where the members hand an envelope to a student and then go back to the coffee. None of it is loud. All of it is the point of the charter.

The meeting line says Last Thursday, 6:00 PM, which is the rhythm the directory lists. Come for the business, stay for the people. The portraits and the posts here are sample material, standing in until the detachment writes its own — Auburn, ME.

Central Maine #810. The year opens the usual way: a short meeting, a full pot of coffee, and a list of local families the detachment already knows. The members voted to keep the spring scholarship on the calendar and to pass the word person to person — Auburn, ME.

Showing up for the spring scholarship — Auburn

By spring the hall had the spring scholarship underway. Nothing about it was complicated. The Detachment 810 set a date, split the jobs, and showed up. A few neighbors who are not members came for the afternoon and stayed to ask about the next meeting — Auburn.

What the notebook says so far

Late summer the detachment looked back at the notebook. The honor detail had been out more than once, the community table had fed a crowded room, and the officers reminded everyone that the next business meeting is Last Thursday, 6:00 PM. This note is a sample of how the detachment might tell that year — Auburn, ME.
