In 1951 a handful of veterans chartered Detachment 1163 — Hickory, NC. From that first meeting the detachment grew into a hall that still marks the year with a memorial service, a community project, and a table full of people who know one another’s stories.
People point to the detachment for the Memorial Day observance and for the quieter help that never makes a program — Hickory. The members would rather be useful than famous, which is why the hall still smells like coffee on meeting night.
Meetings are 2nd Thursday, 7:00 PM, at the hall — Hickory. This page is a sample so neighbors can see the shape of the work. The group itself has not claimed the page, so the stories here are an illustration, written in the voice the detachment might use.
